First Dance Tips For Your Wedding

The first dance as husband and wife is one of the most amazing moments at your wedding. So, it is important to put a little thought into it. Here are some tips to ensure your first dance goes smoothly and is one to remember.

1. Pick a song you BOTH love

I know Ed Sheeran is your JAM, but if your partner can't stand the sound of his voice, he might not be a good choice for a first dance song. You don't want either of you looking back on that moment wishing the song was different. Do your research, listen to a bunch of different songs, and choose the one you are both comfortable with. Hint: it can make it easier to dance to if it's a song you both know very well.

2. Don’t “Wing It”

Even if you aren't doing a choreographed dance routine, it is important to at least practice your first dance a few times. Just put on some music and dance around in your living room. Figure out where you are going to place your hands, feet, and maybe practice a spin or two. You don’t want to go out there on the day of your wedding and feel awkward as you step all over each other's toes.

3. Choreography is Optional

So you have watched countless videos of amazingly choreographed dance routines, but now you are having flashbacks of when you were 6 and ran off the stage crying at your dance recital. Having a fully choreographed routine is completely optional, and may not be necessary/your style. There is nothing wrong with you and your hubby holding each other close swaying back and forth to the music. Don't step so far outside your comfort zone that your first dance becomes less about the romance and the joy, and more about the stress of remembering a routine.

4. Cut Down Your Song

You may think you want to dance to that full 5-minute John Legend song, but around the 2-minute mark, the two of you are going to start to feel a little awkward with everyone just staring at you while you sway. My advice: cut down your song. Making your song 1.5 minutes long will be enough so the two of you can look into the eyes of each other and feel the love of the moment. And then the song slowly fades out and the whole moment was short, sweet, and perfect. You don’t want to look back at your first dance and just remember how you wished the song would end already. And P.S you can do this with ALL your special dances father/daughter, mother/son, etc.

Your first dance will always be special because it was your first dance as husband and wife. If you make it about you as a couple and plan it out, it will be a wonderful and romantic moment you will think about for a lifetime!
