You are going to be in all of your wedding photos of course, which means so is your hairstyle! You don’t want to look at those photos and be horrified by that overdone braided top-knot, that really seemed chic at the time! So how do you go about picking a great hairstyle, and not falling victim to crazy hair trends? Here are some ways you can figure out what style will make you feel the most beautiful and comfortable on your wedding day!
1. Be realistic
You always imagined yourself with a beautiful boho braid running down your back, swinging around while you danced to the cha-cha slide. But now you have a pixie cut, and it's time to maybe be realistic. It's important when choosing a hairstyle for you that you don't overcomplicate it. Using thousands of bobby pins and extensions, to achieve a look that just isn't practical for your current mane is going to be stressful, and could lead to a hair disaster on your wedding day.
2. Go with what you know
On your wedding day, you still want to look like YOU. So it’s smart to go with an elevated version of what you usually wear day-to-day. Are you a girl who just puts a few waves in your hair and runs out the door? Go with a nice Hollywood glam wave, pulled back on one side with a beautiful hair accessory. Or are you a girl who throws your hair in a top knot every morning? Then go with a fancy messy bun. If you are not used to seeing yourself with a certain hairstyle, it can be a little jarring to see that on your wedding day. You want to feel like yourself on your big day, not self-conscious. Go with what you know works for you!
3. The Dress
Classic ball gown, Hippie sheath, slim power suit, or sexy mermaid. No matter what you choose to walk down the aisle in, your hairstyle should compliment your ensemble. You want your hair to blend with your dress so that all eyes are focused on your natural flawlessness, not your hair. Think about the overall look you are going for. If you want to look classic and timeless, and your dress is a classic satin ball gown. Go for a hairstyle that is the same, classic and timeless, like a low chignon bun, not a flower crown and fishtail braid. Maybe the back of your dress has stunning and intricate lace and beadwork, wearing your (waist length) hair down, will cover all that gorgeous detail you love. Your hair and gown should work together, not against each other.
4. Keep an open mind
I know that classic french twist seems like the one and only choice for your big day. But don’t go into your hair consultation too narrow-minded. It is important to have different ideas about what you want to rock on your wedding day. But if you fancy just one hairstyle, and the end result does not meet your expectations, it can leave you feeling defeated instead of excited. Go into your consultation with a few different ideas, and be open to suggestions. Your hairstylist will be able to guide you on what will work best with your hair type, face shape, and gown.
5. Photos
A picture is worth a thousand words, so look at them! Go through your phone and find the pictures that you think you look the most beautiful in, how are you wearing your hair in those photos? Seeing pictures of a certain hairstyle on you can be much more informative than looking in the mirror. So when you go to your consultation, bring a friend and have them take pictures of every hairstyle, from every angle! Seeing the style from all angles will show you how it’s going to look in all your wedding photos.
Be realistic, be yourself, have fun with it, and you will look amazing!
